Toro Bravo Delivers Big Racing and an Even Bigger Win for Women’s Mountain Biking

The June 7 Toro Bravo XC race brought the heat as riders lined up for another
exciting round of the 3CX Summer Series at Toro Regional Park in Monterey. With
fast racing, challenging terrain, and an enthusiastic crowd, the event showcased
everything that makes grassroots cross-country mountain biking so special Women’s Mountain Biking.

At the front of the field, the Open racers put on an impressive display of speed and
determination. Antonio Torres claimed the Open Men’s victory with a winning time
of 1:29:21, while Lucia Walbeck topped the Open Women’s field in 1:33:58.

But one of the biggest victories of the day wasn’t measured by a finish time.

Women’s participation continues to grow, and Toro Bravo was a perfect example of
that momentum. Women made up an impressive 20% of the overall field. Four women competed in the Open category, marking a significant step forward for elite women’s racing. The 3CX Winter Series finale on March 29 featured nine women in the Open category. That momentum is continuing into the 2026 Summer Series season. Just a short time ago, seeing even one
woman line up in the Open division was notable. Four women battled at the front of the race. Their presence reflects the growth and strength of the women’s mountain bike community.

More women are now lining up at the start line. This reflects the efforts of local race organizers, clubs, and advocates. They are making mountain bike racing more welcoming and accessible. From first-time racers to seasoned veterans, Toro Bravo offered a strong sense of community. The atmosphere celebrated competition, camaraderie, and a shared love of the sport.

The 3CX Summer Series continues to prove that cross-country racing is thriving in
Northern California, with opportunities for riders of every age and ability to challenge
themselves and build community.

Congratulations to Antonio Torres and Lucia Walbeck on their Open victories, and to
every racer who pinned on a number and gave it their all. A special shout-out goes to
the women of Toro Bravo, whose growing presence on the course is helping shape
the future of mountain biking.

● Open Men: Antonio Torres — 1:29:21
● Open Women: Lucia Walbeck — 1:33:58

If Toro Bravo is any indication, the future of mountain bike racing is bright—and it’s
becoming more inclusive with every event. Seeing 20% women on the start line,
including four fierce Open women racers, is something worth celebrating and a
trend we hope continues throughout the season.
