From soaring above the Sierra pines to carving Mammoth’s legendary alpine trails, MTB Girls Magazine discovers a mountain biking destination where breathtaking landscapes, welcoming community, and unforgettable adventures inspire riders of every ability.
The little girl glanced back over her shoulder, smiled beneath her full-face helmet, and yelled, “Don’t get stuck in the kitty litter!” Then she disappeared around the next switchback before I had a chance to respond. Standing more than 11,000 feet above sea level, I couldn’t help but laugh as I released my brakes, leaned into the corner, and followed her down the trail.

That single moment perfectly captured everything I would come to love about Mammoth Mountain. The trails challenge your skills, the scenery humbles your spirit, and the people remind you that mountain biking is about far more than riding bikes. It’s about confidence, community, adventure, and discovering you’re capable of more than you ever imagined.
Where Mountain Biking Comes Alive
From the moment our MTB Girls Magazine team arrived in Mammoth Lakes, we knew this wasn’t just another mountain town. Bike racks filled nearly every parking lot, riders gathered over coffee before morning rides, and families pedaled through The Village while downhill bikes rolled toward the gondola. Conversations naturally revolved around trail conditions, favorite descents, and where everyone planned to ride next.
Mountain biking isn’t simply something people do in Mammoth. It’s woven into the fabric of the community and reflected in every trailhead, café, and smiling rider you meet. Whether you’re a first-time visitor or a lifelong local, there’s an immediate sense that everyone belongs.
Our home for the week was Juniper Springs Resort, whose exceptional hospitality provided the perfect basecamp for exploring everything Mammoth Mountain had to offer. Nestled beside the mountain with convenient access to both the Bike Park and The Village, it was the ideal place to recharge after long days of riding. After lunch in The Village, we made our way toward Mammoth Mountain Bike Park for one of the mountain’s signature weekly experiences.
Soaring Above the Pines
Nearly fifty women gathered beneath the Panorama Gondola for Mammoth Mountain’s Women’s Wednesday Rides, a welcoming community event that brings together riders of every age and ability throughout the summer. The energy was contagious as friends reunited, first-time visitors introduced themselves, and everyone eagerly anticipated an evening on the mountain.
As the gondola climbed higher, we soared above dense Sierra Nevada forests of towering Jeffrey pines, lodgepole pines, and majestic red firs before emerging into Mammoth’s breathtaking alpine landscape. Below us stretched an endless blanket of evergreen forest, while ahead rose volcanic peaks, rugged ridgelines, and panoramic Sierra views that seemed to continue forever. At more than 11,000 feet above sea level, Mammoth offers one of California’s most spectacular mountain biking experiences.
Standing at the summit, nobody rushed to begin riding. Instead, we paused to admire the scenery, capture photographs, and breathe in the cool alpine air. Looking across the Sierra Nevada from above the treetops, it became immediately clear why Mammoth Mountain has earned its reputation as one of North America’s premier mountain biking destinations.
When the ride finally began, laughter echoed through every corner as experienced riders encouraged newcomers and local women welcomed visitors like old friends. Every successful descent was met with cheers, smiles, and high-fives, regardless of experience level. Nobody cared how fast you rode. They simply wanted you to enjoy the experience, and that welcoming culture defines Mammoth Mountain.
Every other Wednesday through September, Women’s Wednesday Rides continue to create opportunities for women to build confidence, improve their skills, and develop lasting friendships on two wheels. It’s more than a group ride. It’s a celebration of what mountain biking can accomplish when community comes first.
Learning From the Next Generation
The following morning became one of the most memorable experiences of our entire visit as I joined Mammoth’s fourth and fifth grade girls mountain bike team for practice alongside Coach Lindsey, Coach Tonya, and Coach Lily. Watching these young riders confidently navigate Mammoth’s loose volcanic terrain was both inspiring and humbling.
Where I cautiously feathered my brakes, they trusted their bikes. Where I analyzed every corner, they simply flowed through the trail with confidence earned from countless hours of practice. Every rider encouraged the next, every obstacle became another opportunity to learn, and every descent ended with laughter.
Their advice was simple but unforgettable: “Look where you want to go. Keep your momentum. And don’t get stuck in the kitty litter.” Some of the best coaching I’ve ever received came from girls barely tall enough to reach the handlebars, proving that confidence and encouragement often come from the most unexpected places.
Together we descended nearly eight unforgettable miles into The Village before stopping for a trail cleanup. Although Mammoth’s trail system was remarkably clean, our group still filled an entire trash bag with litter. It served as a powerful reminder that world-class trails remain beautiful because people care enough to protect them, and that same spirit of stewardship was evident everywhere we rode throughout the week.

Racing at Elevation
Later that evening, I pinned on a race number and lined up for the Village Championship Cross Country race. Coming from near sea level, racing above 8,000 feet immediately reminded me that Mammoth Mountain demands your full attention. Every climb challenged my lungs, every descent rewarded good technique, and the loose volcanic pumice required patience, confidence, and complete trust in the bike beneath me.
Yet what stood out most wasn’t simply the racing. It was the atmosphere. Families lined the course cheering for every rider, volunteers celebrated every finisher, and competitors congratulated one another regardless of where they placed. That’s what makes Mammoth Mountain different. Competition exists here, but community always comes first.
The Women’s field showcased the incredible talent within Mammoth’s cycling community. In the July 9 Village Championship XC Race #4, Caroline Britton captured the Women’s division victory, while Coach Tonya Bray crossed the finish line in second place with an impressive time of 48:52.3, finishing just 14.7 seconds behind the winner.
Congratulations to Coach Tonya Bray on an exceptional season. Her second-place finish in Race #4, combined with her consistent performances throughout the summer, earned her the Overall Women’s Mammoth Mountain Village Championship XC Series title. Her dedication to racing, coaching, and mentoring young riders exemplifies the spirit of Mammoth Mountain and the supportive cycling community that makes this destination so special.
For one unforgettable evening, I wasn’t simply covering the race as Editor-in-Chief of MTB Girls Magazine. I became part of a vibrant mountain biking community that celebrates every rider, every finish, and every opportunity to inspire the next generation.
The excitement doesn’t stop with cross-country racing. Throughout the summer, the Village Championship Downhill Series gives riders of all abilities the opportunity to test their skills on Mammoth Mountain Bike Park’s legendary gravity trails. From first-time racers to seasoned downhill competitors, the series showcases the same welcoming, community-first spirit that defines Mammoth Mountain and keeps riders coming back year after year.
