National Girls and Women in Sports Day (NGWSD) was first celebrated in 1987 as a tribute to Olympic volleyball player Flo Hyman, who was a strong advocate for equity in women’s sports. She tragically passed away from Marfan syndrome while competing in Japan. The day was established to honor her legacy and has since grown into a national observance recognizing the accomplishments of female athletes, the progress made in women’s sports, and the challenges that still exist in achieving gender equality in athletics.
NGWSD is celebrated annually on the first Wednesday of February, bringing together athletes, coaches, educators, and organizations to promote sports participation among girls and women. The event is supported by organizations such as the Women’s Sports Foundation, which continues to advocate for gender equity in sports and the enforcement of Title IX, the landmark U.S. law that prohibits sex-based discrimination in federally funded education programs, including athletics.
