Women’s Races at Sea Otter: This is the 34th Sea Otter Classic Race in Monterey, California and is a trailblazer for women in mountain biking.
The Sea Otter Classic, held annually in Monterey, California, is more than just a bike race—it’s a celebration of cycling culture that has become one of the most iconic events in the sport. Since its inception in 1991, the event has grown to encompass a wide range of disciplines, including cross-country, downhill, dual slalom, and enduro. While the event is a showcase for the best talent in mountain biking, it has also played a pivotal role in elevating women’s racing and fostering a community of female riders.

A Brief History of the Sea Otter Classic
The Sea Otter Classic began as a grassroots event to bring together the cycling community. Over the decades, it has grown into one of the largest cycling festivals in the world, attracting thousands of amateur and professional riders, as well as industry insiders. The event’s timing in April, at the start of the race season, has made it a key stop for athletes looking to make an early statement in their careers.
The race features stunning views of the Monterey Peninsula and challenges riders with diverse terrain, including technical singletrack, fire roads, and grueling climbs. The backdrop of the Laguna Seca Raceway adds a unique dimension, with spectators cheering riders on as they conquer each stage.
Women’s Racing at Sea Otter: Breaking Barriers
From the very beginning, the Sea Otter Classic has provided a platform for women in mountain biking, offering equal opportunities to compete in various disciplines. Over the years, it has been a launching pad for many iconic female riders, including Juli Furtado, Alison Dunlap, and more recently, Kate Courtney.
In the early 1990s, women’s mountain bike racing was still gaining traction on the global stage. The Sea Otter Classic stood out by offering equal prize money for women and men, a bold move that set the tone for future races. This commitment helped attract top-tier female talent, making it one of the most competitive events in women’s cycling.
Memorable Moments in Women’s Racing

1. Juli Furtado’s Dominance (1990s): A former Olympic skier turned mountain biker, Furtado was one of the early stars of the Sea Otter Classic. Her dominance in the cross-country events helped bring visibility to women’s racing.

2. Alison Dunlap’s Triumphs: A two-time Olympian and World Champion, Dunlap consistently excelled at the Sea Otter Classic, showcasing the growing depth of talent in women’s mountain biking.

3. Kate Courtney’s Rise (2010s): The Sea Otter Classic served as a stepping stone for Courtney, who would go on to become a World Champion and an advocate for women in the sport.
The Present and Future of Women’s Racing at Sea Otter
Today, the Sea Otter Classic remains a critical event for women in mountain biking. It offers amateur riders a chance to compete alongside professionals and provides exposure for rising stars. The event also serves as a platform for discussions about equality in the sport, with panel discussions and workshops often highlighting women’s contributions to cycling.
In recent years, the inclusion of more diverse categories, including age-group races and beginner-friendly events, has encouraged more women to participate. These efforts align with the broader goal of making mountain biking an inclusive sport for everyone.
Why the Sea Otter Classic Matters
The Sea Otter Classic has not only showcased the talents of women riders but also helped shape the narrative around gender equality in mountain biking. By offering equal prize money, fostering a welcoming environment, and providing a platform for women’s voices, the event has contributed significantly to the growth of the sport.
As it continues to evolve, the Sea Otter Classic remains a beacon of progress, inspiring the next generation of female riders to conquer trails, push boundaries, and make their mark on the world of mountain biking.
If you’re planning to attend this year’s event, don’t miss the women’s races—they’re bound to be as thrilling as the trails themselves!
addition to sections of the Arizona Trail, our mountain bike trip on the North Rim of the Grand Canyon includes a visit to Grand Canyon National Park and the highly acclaimed Rainbow Rim Trail. This mountain biking trail on the upper region of Grand Canyon National Park is one of our all-time favorites. The construction techniques the trail builders used to form these trails are some of the best we have found in the West. The grade rarely exceeds 9% and everybody feels like a hero. The climbs are gentle and consistent, and the descents are smooth and flowing. With views of the Grand Canyon you really cannot beat the camping. This trip is the perfect way for intermediate mountain bikers to see one of America’s most spectacular National Parks! The North Rim of the Grand Canyon is at a higher elevation than that of the South Rim, so our route on this side of the canyon is a bit more challenging than that on the South Rim. This is a fantastic guided mountain biking trip for those of varying skills, with some options for longer or shorter rides.
